20 MayDays of ‘gizmo’ launches return: NASA team to test new vehicle-descent technologies

ScienceDaily (May 18, 2012) ? NASA technologists will get a chance next summer to relive the good old days when Agency engineers would affix space-age gizmos to rockets just to see if the contraptions worked.

In what will be the first of four high-altitude balloon flights to begin in the summer of 2013, technologists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., and Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Va., are preparing to test new deceleration devices that could replace current descent technologies for landing ever-larger payloads at higher elevations on Mars.

NASA hasn’t tested deceleration technologies supersonically since 1972 when it conducted four high-altitude tests of a supersonic parachute used during the Viking program. “We’ve been stuck with that design ever since,” said Mark Adler, NASA’s Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD) program lead. NASA will use the same technology again this year when it delivers the Curiosity rover to Mars.

However, planetary landers of tomorrow will require much larger drag devices than any now in use. “What we need is new technology to slow larger, heavier landers from the supersonic speeds of atmospheric entry to subsonic ground-approach speeds,” Adler said.

The LDSD program is aimed at giving NASA a new and improved capability. Funded by NASA’s Space Technology Program, the JPL-led team plans to conduct full-scale, stratospheric tests of three potentially breakthrough technologies. The aim is to raise their technology-readiness levels to about six, which means they could be used in a flight project, perhaps as early as 2018.

The first two are supersonic inflatable decelerators, large pressure vessels that inflate around an entry vehicle and slow it from Mach 3.5 or faster to about Mach 2. One of these inflatable devices measures nearly 20 feet in diameter (six meters), the other nearly 26 feet (eight meters). The third technology is a 110-foot (33.5-meter) parachute to further slow the entry vehicle from Mach 2 to subsonic speeds needed for a safe landing. All three would be the largest devices of their kind ever flown at speeds several times greater than the speed of sound.

The design calls for the team to attach a test vehicle equipped with the decelerator and parachute to a Wallops-provided high-altitude balloon. Once the balloon reaches an altitude of about 22 miles (36 kilometers) above Earth’s surface, the rocket would fire its engines and carry the test vehicle to Martian atmospheric densities at an altitude of 31 miles (50 kilometers) at Mach 4. There, the test vehicle would deploy the supersonic decelerator, followed by the parachute.

Perfect Marriage of Capabilities

The project leverages the strengths of both organizations, said Scott Schaire, Wallops LDSD acting project manager. While NASA JPL and its contractors are developing the test vehicle, decelerators, and parachute, NASA Wallops is responsible for balloon operations, balloon instrumentation, and other operations associated with balloon launches.

One significant NASA Wallops-provided technology is an entirely new balloon launch system — an effort Schaire’s team undertook specifically for the supersonic tests. With this new system, the test vehicle will be suspended from a vertical, 80-foot tower. Its job is preventing the test vehicle from hitting the ground as the balloon begins to lift off. A modified apparatus that resembles a farm-irrigation system will help technicians lay out the balloon and a new spool vehicle will hold the balloon until launch.

In the first test as early as August 2013, the team plans to evaluate the performance of both the decelerator and parachute. “Launching small rockets from large balloons,” Schaire said. “What could be a better project for Wallops?”

20 MayNewspaper Attacks UK Government For Its ?Closeness? To Google

Screen Shot 2012-05-19 at 14.25.54UK tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail, has decided to raise the issue of Google’s influence on the UK government, after uncovering the fact that Conservative Party ministers have held meetings with Google an average of once a month since the General Election two years ago. There have been 23 meetings between Tory ministers and Google since June 2010, with Prime Minister David Cameron meeting Google three times and George Osborne – who as Chancellor of the Exchequer is supposed to meet with business leaders – four times in two years. The story needs to be a seen in a wider context. The Conservatives have recently come under fire for having too close a relationship to another powerful entity, News Corporation (as did the Labour party during its tenure). A huge inquiry into Press standards has in large part focused on the ties between Rupert Murdoch?s media giant and the Conservatives. But what the report buries way down in the article, is the number of times the newspaper itself has met with the Government. A Google spokesperson told us: “It’s absolutely right that governments speak with companies about issues that affect their citizens. The British Government makes the list of those meetings publicly available – including the Daily Mail?s 34 meetings over the same period.” In other words, the Daily Mail has met with the Government almost one and a half times a month (on average) since they entered office – that’s quite a bit more than Google has. It’s likely those were high-level meetings, not editorial ones.

19 MayMore doctors are ditching the old prescription pad

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Dropping a paper prescription at the drugstore is becoming old-school: More than a third of the nation’s prescriptions now are electronic, according to the latest count.

The government has been pushing doctors to e-prescribe, in part because it can be safer for patients. This year, holdouts will start to see cuts in their Medicare payments.

Thursday’s report from Surescripts, the largest network for paperless prescribing, shows more doctors are signing up fast.

At the end of 2011, 36 percent of all prescriptions were electronic ? the doctor wrote it by computer and sent it directly to the pharmacy with the push of a button, the report found. That’s up from 22 percent of prescriptions that were paperless a year earlier.

For patients, the convenience is obvious ? shorter drugstore waits. Pharmacists like not having to squint at the doctors’ messy handwriting. And computerized ordering systems allow doctors to easily check that a new drug won’t interact badly with one the patient’s already taking.

New research by Surescripts and some pharmacies and pharmacy benefit managers uncovered another benefit: More patients pick up a new prescription when it’s filed electronically.

Doctors know that too often, patients never fill some of their prescriptions. Maybe they lose the slip of paper, or forget to drop it off or decide they can’t afford it.

The new research examined 40 million prescriptions, a mix of paper, phoned, faxed or electronic ones ? and found a 10 percent increase in patients who fill a prescription when it’s e-prescribed.

The main reasons: Drugstores receive every paperless prescription, and they can call patients to come in and pick up their waiting medicine, said Surescripts’ researcher Seth Joseph. Also, e-prescribing programs automatically show the doctor which brands are covered by the patient’s insurance with the lowest out-of-pocket cost.

Even if your doctor is a big e-prescriber, you might still walk out with a few paper prescriptions. That’s because there are additional steps that doctors and pharmacies must take for electronic prescriptions of controlled substances, such as certain painkillers, and the rules vary by state, Joseph explained.

For several years, the government has run incentive programs to encourage doctors to adopt e-prescribing and other computerized health records, offering payments to help defray the costs of adopting the systems. Now Medicare is beginning to cut some reimbursements to certain doctors who don’t e-prescribe at least a little bit.

Surescripts’ report counted 390,000 doctors who were e-prescribing at least some of the time in 2011, and its records show an additional 10,000 had begun by the end of February. That translates into just over half of office-based physicians, a big jump since 2008, when only about 12 percent of doctors were e-prescribing.

18 MayMax Payne 3

I love a good crime flick, especially when it’s of the Asian variety. It pains me to admit this, but my first Jon Woo experience wasn?t Hard Boiled or The Killer, but Face Off, the Cage/Travolta vehicle. I?ve since gone back and delved into Woo?s signature brand of stylish violence?long shots, slow motion sequences, the bullet ballet?but Face Off, for better or for worse, remains firmly planted in my mind as the introduction to poetic gunplay. The $59.99 Max Payne 3 (for PC, PS3, Xbox 360) is my new Face Off. Minus Travolta’s awful acting and Cage’s burgeoning insanity.

Out of the Past
Rockstar Game’s sequel picks up with an optimistic (or about as optimistic as Max can get) Payne having relocated to Sao Paulo, Brazil to begin a new life and to attempt to escape the pain that is his murdered family. Sort of. Payne makes a living as a living as bodyguard who protects a rich family from Brazilian gangsters. Naturally, things take a turn for the worse, which sends Max back into action with guns blazing.

That isn’t a dismissal of the game’s plot. It’s actually quite good. It’s full of film noir nods, and features dialogue that sounds as though it was ripped from Double Indemnity. When Max utters that one of the rich business types is “smoother than an oil slick on an iceberg,” it will bring a smile to a face to genre fans. In fact, Max Payne 3′s voice acting is top-notch all around.

Gun Crazy
Still, it’s the fast-paced, gun-based combat?laced with ample amounts of Bullet Time?that’s the heart of the Max Payne experience. Run and gunning through levels can prove effective for dispatching enemies, but Bullet Time (which slows down the game world in a decidedly Matrix like fashion) is the key to success, especially in later levels.

The Bullet Time meter builds as you blow holes through foes, and drains when you activate any of the three Bullet Time modes, Shoot-Dodge (slo-mo shooting while diving), Melee (hand-to-hand combat), and Last Man Standing (an opportunity to recover from a fatal shot by popping a painkiller and returning fire). Factor in the new, dedicated cover system and players will find several beautifully violent ways to pump people with lead?it’s a true bullet ballet that’s an ode to Woo through and through. The one Bullet Time drawback is that it’s somewhat clunky switching between targets while in slo-mo.

As the slugs zip through the gorgeous Brazilian environments (nightclubs, penthouses, and other locales), they crack and shatter objects unfortunate enough to get caught in the crossfire. The realistically-modeled Max Payne wears battle scars, too, in the form of blood-stained, bullet-ridden outfits.

On Dangerous Ground
Besides the single-player main campaign there’s also an Arcade Mode featuring Score Attack (where you shoot, literally, for a high score), and New York Minute (a speed run that challenges you to collect a body count in 60 seconds). These side-games serve as fun diversions, but the real joy here is multiplayer.

Max Payne 3 features a robust multiplayer mode (supporting between 2 and 16 players) that adds a far more chaotic element, while ditching Max’ solo story. The multiplayer modes are highlighted by Payne Killer (two players fighting as Max and Raul in a King-of-the-Hill-like contest), and Gang Wars (a team-based contest that has a morphing storyline based on the events of the previous match).

There are also more traditional modes such as Team Deathmatch that are given the sexy Max Payne touch with Bullet Time and special perks that are found in the playfield. As you gain experience points, you’ll unlock new weapons and abilities Rockstar has taken great strides to keep Max Payne 3 fresh.

This Gun For Hire
The market is flooded with numerous “guy with guns” games, but Max Payne 3 is the rare game that makes you the player feel like a total bad ass as you run, gun, dive, and gun some more. Rockstar Games excels at this type of action, and Editors’ Choice Max Payne 3 represents the developer’s storytelling and design prowess on full display.

17 MayOMG! Texting ups truthfulness, new iPhone study suggests

ScienceDaily (May 16, 2012) ? Text messaging is a surprisingly good way to get candid responses to sensitive questions, according to a new study to be presented this week at the annual meeting of the American Association for Public Opinion Research.

“The preliminary results of our study suggest that people are more likely to disclose sensitive information via text messages than in voice interviews,” says Fred Conrad, a cognitive psychologist and Director of the Program in Survey Methodology at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research (ISR).

“This is sort of surprising,” says Conrad, “since many people thought that texting would decrease the likelihood of disclosing sensitive information because it creates a persistent, visual record of questions and answers that others might see on your phone and in the cloud.”

With text, the researchers also found that people were less likely to engage in ‘satisficing’ — a survey industry term referring to the common practice of giving good enough, easy answers, like rounding to multiples of 10 in numerical responses, for example. “We believe people give more precise answers via texting because there’s just not the time pressure in a largely asynchronous mode like text that there is in phone interviews,” says Conrad. “As a result, respondents are able to take longer to arrive at more accurate answers.”

Conrad conducted the study with Michael Schober, a professor psychology and dean of the graduate faculty at the New School for Social Research. Their research team included cognitive psychologists, psycholinguists, survey methodologists and computer scientists from both universities, as well as collaborators from AT&T Research. Funding for the study came from the National Science Foundation.

“We’re in the early stages of analyzing our findings,” says Schober. “But so far it seems that texting may reduce some respondents’ tendency to shade the truth or to present themselves in the best possible light in an interview — even when they know it’s a human interviewer they are communicating with via text. What we cannot yet be sure of is who is most likely to be disclosive in text. Is it different for frequent texters, or generational, for example?”

For the study, the researchers recruited approximately 600 iPhone-users on Craigslist, through Google Ads, and from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, offering them iTunes Store incentives to participate in the study. Their goals were to see whether responses to the same questions differed depending on several variables: whether the questions were asked via text or voice, whether a human or a computer asked the questions, and whether the environment, including the presence of other people and the likelihood of multitasking, affected the answers.

Among the questions that respondents answered more honestly via text than speech: In a typical week, about how often do you exercise? During the past 30 days, on how many days did you have 5 or more drinks on the same occasion?

And among the questions that respondents answered more precisely via text, providing fewer rounded numerical responses: During the last month, how many movies did you watch in any medium? How many songs do you currently have on your iPhone?

According to Schober and Conrad, changes in communication patterns and their impact on the survey industry prompted the study. About one in five U.S. households only use cell phones and no longer have landline phones. These households are typically not surveyed even though cell-only households tend to differ in important ways from households with landline phones. More people are using text messages on mobile phones, with texting now the preferred form of communication among many people in their teens and 20s in the U.S. Texting is extremely common among all age groups in many Asian and European nations.

Conrad and Schober are also finding that people are more likely to provide thoughtful and honest responses via text messages even when they’re in busy, distracting environments.

“This is the case even though people are more likely to be multitasking — shopping or walking, for example — when they’re answering questions by text than when they’re being interviewed by voice.”
